CO-CREATING A SPACE OF WONDER AND INCLUSIVITY
ZU STUDIOS
Zu Studios was an extraordinary community arts project which I co-directed with founder Martin Thomas for 8 years. Hosting hundreds of events including live music, talks, workshops and weddings within a 8000 sq. ft hundred year old warehouse.
Upstairs was divided into a cinema, art workshop spaces for 26 artists. The gardens demonstrated how urban permaculture and bee keeping was possible.
The philosophy was to inspire, educate and celebrate. But more than this it made a stand for inclusivity, creativity, authenticity, kindness, freedom of expression. it provided a safe space for people of all ages and social groups to be and connect with others without any agenda imposed. People could hang out, dance, make art, read, meditate, play games, do projects, have meetings, exercise, without needing to ask or pay. Hosting up to 200 events a year covered the running costs and everyone chipped in their time and skills to make events extraordinary. Attracting people from around the world a community network of thousands of people formed, creating life-long friends and families.
