CO-CREATING A SPACE OF WONDER AND INCLUSIVITY
ZU STUDIOS
Zu Studios was an extraordinary community arts project which I co-ordinated with founder Martin Thomas for 8 years. Hosting hundreds of events including live music, talks, workshops and weddings within a 8000 sq. ft hundred year old warehouse.
Upstairs was divided into a cinema and art workshop spaces for up to 26 artists. The gardens transformed a concrete environment into a thriving green oasis, demonstrating how urban permaculture and urban bee keeping were possible.
The philosophy was to inspire, educate and celebrate. But more than this it made a stand for inclusivity, creativity, authenticity, kindness, and freedom of expression. It provided a safe space for people of all ages and social groups to be and connect with others without any agenda imposed. People could hang out, dance, make art, read, meditate, play games, do projects, have meetings, exercise, use the kitchen without even needing to ask, it was simply an open space for all and people were naturally very respectful of this. Attracting people from around the world a community network of thousands of people formed, creating life-long friends and families. Today the Zu community continues to come together for Zu events and share their events and connect through the Zu Studios fb group which has over 10 thousand members.
