A renaissance masterpiece rebirthed to raise awareness for cancer.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer

I was asked to advise on how to do an art project sponsored by Samsung for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Together with a panel we agreed The Birth of Venus was a beautiful representation of woman, standing in her vulnerability and naked beauty. When they discovered I had taken time in Florence to copy renaissance master pieces - which I then recreated in new ways, I was asked to do te commission. However being a corporate commission dealing with the sensitive issue of breast cancer we decided to just focus on her face.

The idea was to do a collage including 1096 people which is how many new people are affected by breast cancer daily. People whose lives were affected by breast cancer including those in the public eye were asked to submit photos. I then collated these photos with the picture of venue, printed them as an individual photo, stuck them together and worked over the top with coloured inks to  make the final piece. I also cut layers off photos into the hair to bring a 3D relief aspect to the piece. The making of the piece was actually done at a Zu party in front of 400 people over the course of a whole night with assistance from my friend Akasha .  The piece was presented at auction at a high profile night and raised over £5,000 when it sold for the charity. It also got nationwide media coverage so achieved the goals of the project.
